I’m not a big fan of streetwear rap. It’s not the materialism that I have a problem with, it's that the genre (which I found interesting at first) quickly felt like a one-trick pony, lacking in originality.
But “fila” isn’t streetwear rap like I’ve heard it. The track has a soft and confident female energy that dominates over and changes its other sonic elements, like the 90’s sportswear references and New York beat. “fila” shows how the diversification of rap can rejuvenate old themes or tired trends by looking at them through new perspectives.
“fila” isn’t a perfectly polished track, which eventually made me like it even more. It sounds more like the raw beginnings of something genuinely exciting than a final, finished cut. Give it a couple listens. But if that “Lovefool” cover at the end doesn’t sell you, well, I'm not sure what can.
