João Gilberto,
Antônio Carlos Jobim
Why do we like this?
I am in total agreement that romance languages sound more romantic; by that logic, romantic music sounds more romantic too.
Case in point, "Meu Norte," meaning "my north," which I would definitely not listen to if it was in English. Gabriel Nascimbeni sings about love with that necessary, soothing bossa nova undertone: "When I saw you, I saw the sun... such a beautiful star/When I heard your voice, it was the sound I've always been looking for." (Note: I'm trusting my crazy Brazilian friend with this translation.)
Nascimbeni is a São Paulo native, and the only Brazilian selected for the 2010 Red Bull Music Academy. You can hear more of his lovely music on SoundCloud and follow him on Twitter.
