Multi-instrumentalist Joey Vannucchi is the conductor behind From Indian Lakes. The Cali-based creative has released three albums and an EP to date. “Runner” is off his most recent release, Absent Sounds, which dropped in October 2014.
Vannucchi began dabbling in music while living in a small mountain town outside Yosemite National Park. At 20, he began recording in Indian Lakes, California, which prompted the name.
This remix reminds me of Tycho’s smooth, beautiful soundscapes, but with the lovely addition of vocals. Vannucchi’s drowsy falsetto gives me Death Cab for Cutie feels. It would be easy to add this serene song to a sleep playlist, but it begs for more thought than that.
The “Runner" remix, ironically, puts a slow-motion spin on my mind. This song feels like it was recorded underwater and maintained all the weightlessness that the sea affords. I’d play this song at 4 a.m., when insomnia shakes you awake but you have too much lightning in your head to dive back into sleep. Instead, listen and let “Runner” drift you into morning.
