Why do we like this?
Friend's debut, Manifest!, was an interesting blend of 60s pop and indie dance with just the right amount of quirkiness. While enjoyable, it's not an album I've revisited since its release, but after hearing new single "The Way," I might just whack it back into rotation to see what the big deal was.
The opening guitar riff of "The Way" is straight out of the Purple Rain handbook, and if not for Samantha Urbani's fluttering vocals, I would have sworn this was a new Prince tune. With help from Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion), "The Way" is all 80s guitars, slinky bass lines, and seductive lyrics -- quite the change of pace for the Brooklyn act, but very welcomed.
