Friends, I don’t have all the words necessary to profess my love for St. Alban’s Friendly Fires. I am overwhelmed to help share the band’s first new noise since Pala was released in 2011. (We’re not counting Late Night Tales or their quick collab with The Asphodells). In a brand new psychedelic lyric video released today, we give you “Love Like Waves.”
While Friendly Fires has never officially gone on a proper hiatus, they have spent years in the shadows. If you had any concerns that they might not be able to re-create, or expand upon, their synthpop magic, shove them permanently to the side.
“Love Like Waves” strikes the perfect balance of feeling novel and still familiar. The trio is far too seasoned, too mature, to be unsteady with their sound. Ed Macfarlane’s voice is just as delicious and comforting as it was at first listen with “Paris.” I have missed this band dearly.
“Love Like Waves” is blissful, romantic, and sun-kissed. Those juicy tropical flavors we’ve loved before are back and brighter than ever. This song sounds like summer, ahead of the unbearable heat.
Please welcome this beloved band back into your hearts.
