Why do we like this?
Melbourne-based New Zealand born Fortunes have just dropped the first single off their upcoming EP, which is pretty much an ode to R&B.
I feel like this song could be one of those Grade 12 texts analyse for your final English exams, because there are so many references to other songs. Nerding out!
So instead of doing a review I'm going to try and make my Advanced English teacher proud and catch all the references. Here we go, in order of when they first appear:
- Justin Bieber - "Where Are Ü Now"
- Justin Timberlake - "Cry Me A River"
- Michael Jackson - "Man In The Mirror"
- Justin Bieber - "Somebody To Love"
- Destiny's Child - "Cater To You"
- Destiny's Child - "Jumpin, Jumpin"
- Beyonce - "Love On Top"
- Kelly Rowland - "Stole"
- Solange - "Losing You"
- References to Frank Ocean's delayed/scrapped album Boys Don’t Cry
- Frank Ocean - "Sweet Life"
- Alicia Keys - "You Don't Know My Name"
INTERTEXTUALITY, yeah. Did I miss any?
This one is definitely going straight on the playlist!
