Drake put it best once when he summed up the right way to make music: "You just say the right things and they'll be like, 'Damn this dude's a real person and I can relate to that.'" Freddy Ruppert, the creative force behind the collaboration-heavy band Former Ghosts, never fails to live up to this maxim -- constantly reminding listeners what it's like to listen to a real voice. His newest track, "90245," is no different, and reveals his usually brutally honest mindset.
With a sound somewhere stuck between depressing and uplifting, putting on headphones to experience the track is like entering a nostalgia-charged personal little world. Simply put, it's a well-crafted song with poignant lyrics only enhanced by the contrast between the buzzing synth and Annie Lewandowski's soft vocals.
Former Ghosts has been on a kind of a hiatus since their last release,
New Love, but in the mean time Freddy has put out a solo digital album under the name
Dove Hounds.
You can expect the next Former Ghosts album to be a return to their usual style, dropping sometime in the first half of the next year. You can follow the production by going to the
news section of their website< . According to Freddy himself, the album has been influenced by field recordings, early 2000s Warp Records and "Skinny Puppy if Skinny Puppy were really quiet." If this track is any sort of teaser to what the full length might sound like, I can't wait.
Until then, be sure to follow
Freddy's blog for all the latest things Former Ghosts-related.
