Just when I thought Florence + The Machine had gone soft on their soon-to-be-released album High As Hope, the new single "Big God" is released.
The two earlier releases, "Sky Full of Song," and "Hunger," are beautifully presented, but introduce a more subdued sound and gentler theme than Florence + The Machine's previous albums. "Big God" thankfully has more teeth with its hauntingly subdued piano and growling vocals. As the song reaches its climax, Welch howls "let it rain on me," as the horns and percussion build just enough to make the track arena-worthy without taking away from the darkness of the otherwise sparse production.
"Big God" also has a killer staff list. Co-written by Welch and Jamie XX, the song features a cameo from Kamasi Washington. This is the track that is getting me hyped up for the June 29th release of High as Hope and Florence’s summer tour.
