Are there any other emotions that work together quite as well as happiness and sadness? Like, being angry and scared is just stressful. Trust mixed with anticipation? A tad bland. Joy and sorrow though makes for a wonderful blend. It gives us nostalgia, wistfulness, and romance.
Fleet Foxes' "Can I Believe You" balances almost perfectly between the two opposing feelings I'm writing about. I also find that what is best with sorrowful melodies is that there's a solid rhythm to it too. It's like grieving while dancing, which I've 100% read somewhere is a common therapy tactic in some parts of the world.
If you're looking for more of this confusing, yet enchanting, music, I semi-regularly update a Wistful melodies playlist, here. I'm still making my way through Fleet Foxes' new album, Shore, but I trust them, so give it a go if you're curious.
