Since its release, "Madstone," the new single from Berlin-based four-piece Fiordmoss, has twice been described as sounding like a spell being cast. But it feels like there's something far more sinister going on here than an incantation.
The hypnotic tribal beats, the lurking, pulsating synth intermittently pouncing the track, and the haunting echoes of Petra Hermanová's vocals all seems to suggest an ominous ritual at work, as if the band is in the middle of a conjuring.
It's a primal tone that'll draw comparisons to Fever Ray, though it's not quite as unsettling as Karin Dreijer Andersson's acclaimed solo project. Still, "Madstone" is shrouded with a darkness that evokes the occult, and it's dangerously seductive.
