Why do we like this?
I can't believe it's been 6 months since I last wrote about Family of the Year. Since then, they've been hard at work - coming off a tour and recording a new EP that's slated for release on September 27.
"St. Croix," the single off their new EP, is warm and upbeat, a perfect track to compliment the end of summer. You can definitely hear the influences from years spent living near the beach -- Joe and Sebastian Keefe grew up on Martha's Vineyard, James Buckey is from Florida, and Christina Schroeter is originally from Orange County, CA (shoutout to my friends in Irvine). One of the lyrics on "St. Croix" is even "You bring the ocean, I bring the motion," so it's pretty clear that they're hankering for the sea.
This type of surf pop meets folk rock is one of my favorite breeds of indie music today. Take a listen, and maybe add this song to your next beach playlist.
