Today I'm premiering a brand new track from Melbourne's Esther Holt, whose vocals you may remember on Whitley's "My Heart Is Not A Machine."
"By Water" is the first track from Holt's forthcoming second EP. The track opens on soft, clean guitar strums, evoking an atmosphere that's sweet, with a hint of darkness. The vocals and beat kick in shortly after, adding to the ominous tone of it all. Holt has a beautifully sharp, angelic voice that pierces right through you like a slightly-too-ripe pineapple.
I really adore the atmosphere throughout the track -- seemingly simple, there are many intricacies and embellishments that you pick up on after a couple of listens. The guitar strums and sparse beat really draw you in, before climaxing with the horns, winds and distant banjo that make up the sweeping choruses.
Keep an eye out for Holt's forthcoming EP, set for release later this year.
