“Apartment 2f” is a groovy, soulful number from 23-year-old Espa. Championed by underground heroes (and longtime collaborators) Flatbush Zombies, it only takes a few moments to know that this artist is worth your full attention.
The atmospheric track is full of sensual vocals and mellow, catchy beats. Heartfelt lyrics, husky vocals, and a womping bass add final flourishes on the rich soundscape.
As the groove kicks in, the well-used gaps are filled with layers of synth, beats, and harmonies. Momentary lapses into eerie bridges break up the soundscape, adding extra emphasis on the bluesy melody. It's nothing short of vocally stunning.
A compelling, intimate and evocative track, this is an impressive debut. I've got high hopes for Espa and look forward to hearing more from the budding UK musician.
Espa's debut EP, 150th & Broadway, drops later this year.
