"I Admit I'm Scared" first appeared on the demo compilation Igluenza when singer/songwriter Gabrielle Smith was mostly on her own under the Eskimeaux moniker.
With a full band now behind her, the song has re-emerged on the upcoming record O.K. as a refined version of its former self. But it's more than just the audible studio touch that's made the single palpably different from what it was two years ago.
It begins similarly enough, with Smith's soft vocals crooning an earnest confession over a tranquil acoustic: "I admit I'm scared / of a warm side of our bed / I tremble in the face / of your loneliness."
They're poignant lyrics, but she doesn't let them weigh things down musically. Instead of maintaining the hush tone, a dramatic change takes place at the start of the second verse, with hurdling drums transforming the track into an effervescent anthem that's a major departure from the original demo's mellow lumber.
"I Admit I'm Scared" gallops in a way that makes Smith's revelations sound liberating, and it feels all the more so as it charges towards a roaring finale: "And if I had a dime for every time I’m freaking out," she bellows, finally letting it all out in one climactic moment.
