Lorely Rodriguez, better known as LA's Empress Of, is back after a long three years since her last release. Earlier this year, she popped up again, this time surprising us with two new songs, and to officially announce Us, her follow up to 2015's Me. In conjunction with the album announcement and single release Rodriguez has also released a self-directed music video for the track. She's radiant in the video, like some kind of suburban summertime goddess here to bless us with her moves and her glow.
Listening to the song it's clear that this isn't a love song. I mean, it definitely sounds like one, with dreamy production, a bright melody, and a vague title like "When I'm With Him," that at first glance could be assumed to be a song about how good it feels when she's with her boo, but upon closer listen it's a sad song disguised as a happy song. More of a "What happened to our love?" song than a song about being in love.
Some of these lines cut so deep. "I don't know how to love now, I pretend when I'm with him." "I can't help but repress all of the signs telling me that I'm not fine." She's trying so hard to put up a facade, like a sad song pretending to be a happy song. I didn't think a song that sounds like this could make me feel so sad.
Us will be out October 19th on Terrible Records.
