Why do we like this?
My homegirl Isa initially put me onto Empress Of through her radio show, The Parked Car. In between Ciara tunes and hyphy jams (she's in the Bay Area), my last visit to the show yielded this pleasant gem. Electronic but not quite uptempo, yet not a slow jam by any means, "Tristeza" is cerebral and spacey, and Lorely Rodriguez (Empress Of's alter ego) keeps things wistful with her smoky voice.
A quick search on this site shows me Christina and Anibal are already up on the Empress train, and I guess I'm riding in the caboose. Well, no one has singled out this track yet, which hits a soft spot for me because it's in Spanish.
If you're still sleeping on Empress Of, head on over to her website, which honestly is part of what won me over. A complete Craigslist mimic may be trendy/hipster or what have you, but it is also completely hilarious, and in this case, very well done.
