With this song, Ellis is quickly becoming one of my go-to pop artists. The Canadian singer-songwriter has a calming sound that never fails to soothe me.
She brings out a soft, acoustic touch in the beginning, but later the bass guitar adds in an electric element and creates a cool mesh of energies. The bass guitar really kicks in by the bridge, making an absolutely killer vibe. As the tune goes on, she slowly incorporates more sounds you wouldn’t expect, like waves crashing against the shoreline.
The tune feels smooth and gentle, but downcast lyrics may send you into a downcast mood. Even the chorus, with the lines, “This is how the story goes / Things get messy sometimes / And I'm scared and I don't know / Feels like buying flowers just to watch them die,” made my stomach churn.
This song comes from her debut album, Born Again, which she released in April. She gave listeners a sneak peek of the record when she dropped the equally beautiful track, “Fall Apart,” earlier this year.
