I'm ecstatic to present to you all, my dearest pals, the debut single of Elephant Castle, "Cool To Be Unhappy." You may be wondering, "Who is Elephant Castle?" Sweetie, who ISN'T he?
This retro inspired rock project from Los Angeles-based singer and multi-instrumentalist, Phil Danyew, is not his first walk in the park. He was previously releasing solo music in 2009 as artist, Danyew, which had a folk rock sound. After touring with Foster the People for six years (I'm trying not to fan girl), Phil decided to quit to pursue his own music.
Crafting a psych-pop vibe similar to early Tame Impala, "Cool To Be Unhappy" is a unique and positive twist on the classic breakup song, and it's a deviation of his previous independent project. Elephant Castle's foundation dates back to Danyew's childhood: growing up listening to '50s and '60s artists like the Beach Boys and the Beatles. These influences shine through his dreamy vocals and analog synths.
This track checks all of my boxes and has given me a glimmer of hope that this genre of indie rock hasn't died. I feel like I'm blessed with a golden track from 2011 in the best way possible. Cheers!
