Why do we like this?
Ecid is a self described "kamikaze visionary: an artist with an all or nothing approach to every aspect of his art and life. Ambitious almost to a fault with an 'us against them' DIY mentality, Ecid has self-booked, self released, and self-made his own movement."
Otherwise known as Jason McKenzie, Ecid is a Minneapolis emcee who dips his hand into producing from time to time, as is the case with his mash-up album Kings of Compton. He definitely felt ambitious when he set out to cross members of gangsta-rap set N.W.A with midwest alt-rockers Kings of Leon. What's more is he reworked all the original Kings' tracks, so the end result feels less like mash-up by numbers and instead takes on a crazy, undeniably original life of its own, in a similar fashion to Danger Mouse's The Grey Album (The Beatles x Jay-Z), which heavily influenced Ecid's undertaking.
Nowhere is Ecid's talent and potential on display more than on "Still D.R.E." Other tracks on Kings of Compton feel forced, disoriented, over-saturated, but "Still D.R.E." is just what the doctor ordered. Give it a listen and you'll know what I mean.
