Why do we like this?
Thank the Rap God for Earl Sweatshirt. The MC who still can't drink at any venue in the country is a proverbial breath of fresh air. A part of the ubiquitous Odd Future collective, Earl is the only member who seems to be more than just a flavor of the now.
Since returning from a mandatory vacation in Samoa, Earl's output has been minimal and relegated to features. A few days ago, the MC leaked the very first solo offering since EARL: the heartfelt "Chum." Over a subdued piano loop and rap drums, the precocious rapper opens up about his contempt for the publications that outed his stay at Samoa's Coral Reef Academy, missing his father and pre-OF days. All this is done with the malaise of the average teenager and the verbal dexterity of a rhyming veteran.
Let's hope this means more is on the way from this young Jedi.
