Why do we like this?
The latest from Los Angeles-based Dum Dum Girls, He Gets Me High, is a full-throttle girl-powered EP with three new songs and a cover of the Smiths' "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out." The EP was released March 1 through Sub Pop Records, and is a follow-up to their 2010 debut album.
In the ballad "Take Care of My Baby," Dum Dum Girls show their softer side. With an echoed garage band tone, the punk rockers create a song that is sure to create a lighter-filled auditorium. Repetitive instrumentals and simplistic beats create the perfect backdrop for the beautiful, powerful lyrics.
The quartet makes love songs cool, and proves that girls can truly rock out without sounding like Gwen Stefani, in her later years at least.
Continuing similar patterns from their previous full length album I Will Be from Sub Pop, the girls prove that the same formula won't disappoint. And to insure another stunning release, the girls worked with Sune Rose Wagner of the Raveonettes and Richard Gottehrer ("My Boyfriends Back"), whom they teamed up with in their previous album as well.
Ending the EP with the Smiths' cover, vocalist Dee Dee trades in her deep, powerful vocals for a lighter and breezier tone to mimic Morrissey's, and does a pretty impressive job of it.
