This guy Sly 5th Ave is a beast!
He's taken some of 2013's biggest pop hits in the black cannon and re-recorded them as orchestral covers... in his damn living room! Now he takes on Drake's stadium power ballad "Hold On We're Going Home" and turns it into the score for the one introspective and interpersonal scene in a Michael Bay movie. Tall, gallant and bittersweet, Sly and his Club Casa Chamber Orchestra once again tease out depth and nuance from pop glitz.
While listening to one of the earlier covers, perhaps it was "Love Me," I started wondering if the covers wouldn't drive home Sly's message better with their corresponding a capellas. I now think that was misguided. The weight of the covers stem from their ability to de-articulate the feeling in the original, dissolving the pith into the music.
Keep your eye on Sly.
