Here's your heads-up of the month: Douglas Dare's debut album
Whelm from Erased Tapes is dropping later this spring. Drowned in Sound called him a "bright new talent," and listening to this album makes it hard to argue with that claim.
According to Douglas, this is a record that allows listeners to escape, ""something lush and immersive but when looked at closely, the grit and depth could be found." It's a bit of a heart-tearer, an almost gaunt and haggard atmosphere that effuses out of a perfect grand piano. Lyrically, the album is apparently written from other people's perspectives, with songs stemming from a number of historical events. His vocals capture the eerie emotion of the concept.
