The intro to "Slide" sounds like a Kanye/Rza produced intro to a rap song that's going to thump hard and suddenly go insane with the production and rapper's flows. That familiar feeling only lasts for about eight seconds before a raspy, smooth vocal oozes its way into our ears.
Put on some headphones for this one, or just play it at an obnoxious volume, wherever you are. I'll wait. I promise it will be worth it.
Vocalist Donna Missal describes this particular song as a reminder to breathe life in, and enjoy it while doing so. I would describe it as that, plus so much fucking more.
First, you have Donna's vocal. The raspiness is sexy. The melodies she belts out are hypnotic. The lyrics are straight-forward.
Then you have the bottom-end sounds that help to add layers to the overall groove. Whether it's the ongoing bassline that doesn't pause throughout the entirety of the song, or one its layered kicks (I personally enjoy the grittiest one), this jam bumps nicely.
I haven't listened to anything else by Donna, but a quick search suggests that everything before this is VERY different. I like that. It's good not to have to stick to someone else's idealist rules.
