Why do we like this?
Jovan Coleman was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. A self taught musician, he relocated to California in 2007 to live out his calling as a DJ, producer, and drummer.
J-1 quickly became an integral staple of the Los Angeles music scene, whether on the turntables, behind the kit with Dam-Funk and Computer Jay in Master Blazter, or through his numerous beat-tapes, collaborations, and vinyl releases. His drive and positivity were instantly apparent. He will always be missed.
J-1 passed away in Sweden on November 27, 2011. Donations can be sent through Pay Pal to jaydrum@mugpush.com. 100% of all monies will go directly to the Coleman family.
This song, from DJ House Shoes' forthcoming debut album Let It Go on Tres Records and also a bonus cut on Insect Records' Starship 21 Vol.2 compilation, is an ode to J-1. You can purchase the track on Insect Records' bandcamp page and support J-1's legacy and family.
