Alex Zhang Hungtai, more widely known as Dirty Beaches, can't be pinned down. Literally and musically. The roving bandit -- now in Berlin -- makes music that sways somewhere between ambient and rockabilly depending on how he's feeling. Good thing he put out a double album.
For those of you who missed our last two posts, Alex is best known for
Badlands, a psychedelic blues work which rocked the blogosphere with tracks like "Lord Knows Best" and "True Blue." He was highly praised for his lo-fi and personal sound, typified by layers and simple beats. It was all around quality: Devin
called it "nostalgic, heartbreaking, and altogether cinematic."
With this new double album,
Love Is The Devil / Drifters, it's much of the same. Lo-fi noise and heartbreaking stories.
Drifters is the more "accessible" of the two, with a track like "Casino Lisboa" (definitely a reflection of his earlier work) while
Love Is The Devil is a more experimental-based drone accompaniment. Personally, I'm more into his noise sound, since it's got that minimalist loop style going on that reminds me of
earlier Eluvium stuff. If you're hungry for similar genre-bending tracks, check out "
Alone at the Danube." Definitely don't miss listening to his whole discography, including pre-
Badlands stuff, on
Bandcamp.
