Perth trio Dianas really struck a chord with me when I got a hold of their single "Cruelty" six months back. Released as an AA single (the band had shared their debut EP with the world in 2012), it gained plenty of blog and radio appreciation, and nabbed them a number of highly sought-after support slots for the likes of The Oh Sees, Super Wild Horses, and Dick Diver.
They've wasted little time this year, releasing a superb five-track EP a couple of weeks back simply named EP #02 (well, it is, isn't it?). The record is a fantastic piece of work without a weak filler track in sight, with the music covering a wide range of genres including surf pop, shoegaze, and psych.
The current single, "Weightless" (a perfect title for such a drifting, spacey track), possesses a similar quality I've noticed in a lot of their songs, beginning slowly in tempo before building up pace throughout. There's some serious percussion on this one, with the drums shifting gears perfectly underneath layers of flowing guitar and pulsing bass. Vocally it's a home run, with the brilliant harmonization only adding to the nature of the song.
You can grab the entire EP on their Bandcamp for just AUD $5, an increasingly incredible bargain given Australia's slowly declining dollar.
