Devendra Banhart just released Vast Ovid. It’s a beautiful, little EP with four short songs. I truly love everything he does, and this EP is no exception.
What I appreciate most about this song is the juxtaposition of the dismal lyrics to the freely-flowing instrumentals. The song feels like staring into a surrealist painting, then stepping in and walking around a little. I’m utterly in awe in when I listen to it. One of my favorite parts is around ¾ of the way in, when his voice hits a high heavenly pitch, it’s quite angelic. His contrasting lyrics are concise and convey honest emotion in 3 short lines:
“All the world is wasted,
wasted the world is,
and everything I’ve tasted soon bitter it is”.
He’s reached a balance of sentiment and atmosphere that I sincerely appreciate.
