With a name like Destroyer, you'd easily be forgiven for picturing some death-metal outfit with a penchant for long hair, long beards, and screaming. Track titles like 'Tinseltown Swimming in Blood' don't help that image, but Destroyer have been turning out innovative and intelligent indie rock music for over 20 years now.
This is taken from new album ken and showcases a slight shift away from the jazz and blues style of previous releases to a more traditional pop direction for the Canadian outfit. Frontman Dan Bejar channels more than just a little early Bowie as he astutely takes aim at consumer culture and modern indulgence over a steady driving beat, subtle synth builds, lingering trumpets and a bassline that will bounce around your head for days.
It carries you along with irresistible momentum and persists even as it gently fades. "I was a dreamer, watch me leave" is the repeated mantra that sees the track on its way out. A heartfelt and candid lament at lost love and the glitz and glamour of life. At least we can dream with Destroyer for a few minutes before they leave. Beautiful stuff.
