Canadian synth-pop darlings Dear Rouge are celebrating making it to No. 1 on the Alt-Rock charts with their hit “Live Through the Night,” off their sophomore record Phases.
On a star-crossed evening, guitarist Drew McTaggart woke in the night to write the song after dreaming of the beat, bassline and melody. The track shows an impressive evolution for the band -- it’s still in line with the alterna-pop sound Canadians have come to love them for, yet more mature and polished. The beat draws you in on "Live Through the Night," but it’s the ominous bass that really steals the show here. It creeps through the song as the synths, heavy guitar, and killer vocals by singer Danielle McTaggart are layered overtop. The track takes a sharp left turn as it crashes into a full-on rock ending.
McTaggart is a visceral and exciting front woman, and Dear Rouge is certainly a band to watch this year. I’m predicting a global takeover soon.
