Why do we like this?
It's easy to get worn out listening to mindless slop from the Black Eyed Peas or the latest auto-tuned hip-hop single. Which is why San Francisco rapper DaVinci's debut album The Day the Turf Stood Still is so refreshing. Hailing from the Fillmore District, DaVinci's gangsta rap album is centered on how he's watched urban renewal and gentrification change his neighborhood. He talks not only talks about how the black community has been forced out, but also of the struggle for those who stayed behind.
The gangsta rap element makes his music a bit different than that of a super socially conscious and articulate rapper like Talib Kweli; the music is far more raw and angry, but that makes it powerful.
