Davey Lane is something of a prodigy. Easily one of Australia’s great guitar virtuosos, Lane first came to the attention of legendary You Am I as a teenager, posting guitar parts onto their website. He’s now been a full-time member of the band since 1999.
His musical resume is beyond impressive. Lead guitarist in The Pictures, touring with The Twin Set (Tim Rogers’ side project), Jimmy Barnes and Crowded House, and part of one-time Aussie supergroup The Wrights. Now, Lane is set to release a solo album this October.
"Komarov" is the first tune off forthcoming crowdfunded solo debut Atonally Young, and, well, it's phenomenal. Pounding drums, thunderous riffs, and hazy, muffled vox stagger their way in as the song really begins to take shape and flourish.
It's washed-over psychedelia, and it stands apart from the other Australian psych stuff hitting airwaves right now. In essence, it's a rock track. It's heavy enough to keep me focused, but wild enough to keep me dancing. This is the kind of track that will undoubtedly sound as phenomenal live as it does on record, with plenty of room for extended solos throughout.
And, for the guitar lovers out there, this contains what is easily my favorite Aussie guitar solo in recent memory. I won't lie, I replayed it at least three times in a row. It just wails out like nothing else.
Atonally Young will be released on October 3!
