Japanese music producer Tatsuya Oe (Dark Model) is back with a new album and this is “Storm Goddess,” the latest single from it. The title is well chosen, because the fast-paced and unforgiving electronica beats you hear at the start of this track certainly sound stormy. There’s a bit of respite in the middle when the tempo slows, leaving the orchestral sound to stand alone before we gradually get back up to speed.
Dark Model’s album is entitled Saga and includes 13 tracks in which he blends electronica and EDM with a variety of orchestral and vocal sounds. “Survivors” is one of the CD’s more melodic tracks, opening less forcefully with some strings before the beat kicks in.
“Danse Macabre” is Dark Model’s take on a French legend about death appearing at midnight on Halloween that has inspired musicians over the centuries, including most famously the French classical composer Camille Saint-Saens. Dark Model’s combination of the orchestra with a foreboding choir part certainly sets an appropriate tone for this one.
Oe has a long music-making career spanning over two decades. His first release as Dark Model was in 2014 and he received a nomination for the Annual Independent Music Awards that year. This time around, his focus was on creating an epic sound and he described the theme he is seeking to develop on Saga as “unleash your inner hero.” Oe refers to his music-making approach as a bit like that of an animated filmmaker, since he tries to develop emotions and imaginary characters in his music.
