If you have just been tuning into Pitchfork you may think Danny Brown emerged from a pool of molly water just a few years ago. In truth, the Detroit MC cut his teeth figuratively and literally during a lifetime spent achieving a mastery of his craft.
After a year long stint in jail over a charge, Danny Brown came home in the mid 2000's and took this rap shit serious. A faithful 4th of July weekend with producer Nick Speed created the bulk of his breakout tape, Hot Soup. Simultaneously hood, thought-provoking, and funny, the collection of tracks accelerated the snowball that turned into the unmatched frantic genius that exists today.
For the sake of getting history right, Detroit DJ and cultural stalwart House Shoes has gotten Danny's blessing to give Hot Soup the proper release it never received -- gatefold vinyl, new artwork and bonus 45 -- just in time for Record Store Day.
The track we're previewing today is from the bonus 45 accompanying the project. Crafted a few years after Hot Soup, I believe in between The Hybrid and XXX, "Radio Head" is quite simply a beast of a track. Jagged piano chops and rotund kicks create space for Danny to do as Danny does best, talk obscenely funny shit.
