Last week, former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns dropped his debut solo album, Talk. Anyone that listened to his Ariel Love EP would understand that Johns has taken quite a different musical route, ditching the grunge-turned-alternate sound of his previous band to focus on soulful R&B material.
"Cool On Fire" is the first single taken from Talk, and it's a winner. Co-written and produced by Lorde/Jarryd James collaborator Joel Little, it's an uplifting, synth-pop tune that continues Johns' experimentation as an artist and songwriter.
While fans of his early work with Silverchair are sure to question Johns venturing into synth-heavy R&B territory, it's always been evident that Johns enjoys experimenting and pushing his musical boundaries.
Whatever your take, you can't deny the catchiness of "Cool On Fire," and I urge you to give Talk a listen, as it's bloody marvellous.
Talk is out now EMI Music.
