It's been eight long years since we heard from Australian singer, guitarist, and producer Daniel Johns. He's back with a new single and forthcoming EP.
I show my age when I say this, but I was a teenager just like Johns when his band at the time, Silverchair, released their debut album Frogstomp. It's been 20 years since that album exploded onto the Australian rock music scene. If you were alive back then and engaging in any kind of Australian music, it was impossible to escape Johns and the music Silverchair was making.
I crushed all over Silverchair like every other female Aussie teenager of the day. I just couldn't get over how good they sounded and how homegrown they felt -- it was like Johns himself was the long-haired blonde kid sitting up the back of my year 8 social studies class (he wasn't, for the record). Tracks like "Tomorrow," "Pure Massacre," and "Freak" are intertwined with my high school experience and etched into me as a lover of Australian rock music.
Suffice to say, I have tremendous respect for Johns as an artist. I have followed everything he has done over the last 20 years. Now that he's making music again, I can't help but be all over it just like I was when I first heard his stuff.
This track, "Aerial Love," has been out for a couple of weeks and is the first single off an upcoming EP of the same title. It doesn't really matter what I write here, I just really, really want Johns to make a lot more music. I hope this is the start of much more solo work to come.
The four-track EP Aerial Love will be out on March 13, 2015. All the details are on Daniel's Facebook page. And for all you budding remixers out there, Daniel is practically begging you to remix this with all the vocal stems available on his SoundCloud.
