Why do we like this?
In my humble opinion, folk music has a huge disparity in quality. There is a lot of very average folk music floating around, the type that will put you to sleep given its lack of substance. But there's also a bunch of talented acts that do exactly the opposite. Melbourne's Dan and Amy (a brother/sister band) are definitely one of the latter, and one listen of their latest track "Pretend" will explain why.
Released as a B-side with a stripped-back cover of Saskawatch's "Only One," "Pretend" is an incredibly powerful track that will draw comparisons to Fleet Foxes' most stirring work. Beautiful vocals are backed by substantial sections of guitar arrangement, which range from dreamy to driving. Good folk music tells a story, and "Pretend" does this with aplomb; the track is split into two sections, almost like two acts of a play.
Expect to hear a lot more from Dan and Amy over the coming months, with their debut EP scheduled for release around the end of April (they've also got an album coming within the next 12 months!).
