Hailing from the Motor City, Detroit natives Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott make up the basement-electro-pop duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Their mantra is one of openness to new things and lack of expectations, and their track "James Dean" supports this approach.
The tune in its nature is very simplistic, but there is a lusciousness that's created by what I would describe as passion. Supported by a spacey, emotional electronic beat, and featuring deeply auto-tuned vocals, the wavy vibe is laced with some thoughtful lyrics:
"I'm not done, but I've wasted time
A hundred projects; none of them were mine
Suitcase half unpacked
The Internet won't ever love you back"
At first listen, the song may seem quite vanilla, but there's plenty lying beneath the surface. In an attempt understand the meaning of this delicate melody, I hear independent artists being introspective about fueling the machine, releasing their art with no guaranteed reward. At the end of the day, all they can strive for is to be cool. To be remembered in a positive, desirable light when all is said and done. Sorta like James Dean.
