Slow-churned and assaulting the senses, "Waves" by Daily Holla is future leaning music that feels more like music and less like an attempt to make attractive 20-something festival goers lose their cool.
From the first few bars, greeted with slightly off beat arpeggios and synths with the attack dial way over on the right, the impulse to set this in the "Not Your Teenage Sister's Future Bass" basket is strong. Ultimately, the vibe is the star here: carefully constructed for those of us who long for music that actually takes its time to win us over.
The refusal not to blow its wad on the first drop, or even the second, and instead catapult listeners into a choppy harbor at high tide is noble. There's more than one emotional resonance on display here, obviously hitting peak catharsis, but through constantly shifting expectations, Daily Holla gives us a high-wire act that actually pays off.
