Why do we like this?
UK hip-hop often gets a bad rap, but like its counterpart in the States, there's been a changing of the guard this year, with a cavalcade of young up-and-comers invigorating the scene and taking hip-hop in an entirely new direction.
One of these exciting artists is London MC/producer Cynikal, who first came to fans' attention with his breakout 2012 mixtape Breakfast. As 2013 progressed, support from the BBC only heightened his profile, culminating in his first official EP, Toby, set for release this December.
We're happy to premiere the first single from Toby, the introspective "Lost." Over a hazy, pensive beat, Cynikal showcases his smooth flow and lyrical dexterity, professing his feelings for the girl of his dreams who he wants to get "lost" with. Young Teeside crooner Jamie Graham lends his earnest vocals to the chorus, giving the tune an added layer of emotion.
"Lost" is an impressive release, and if this is an indicator of what we can expect from Cynikal in the future, Toby may just be one of the surprise records of the year.
