Why do we like this?
It's almost here, guys!! Cymbals Eat Guitars drops their new album, Lenses Alien, on August 30, and I think all you dedicated fans will be pretty pleased. Sure, it's a new release, but I feel 16 years old again while I'm listening to this album.
Lenses Alien is dense and saturated with some classic-sounding riffs and some wobbly, intricate hooks but no matter how traditional or unconventional they get, they have a gift for melding it all together in quite the tasteful way. The opening track is eight minutes and thirty two seconds of a tug of war between tension and relaxation. That's the only taste of drawn out psychedelia that you'll get with this album; the rest of the tracks are considerably shorter yet beautifully composed.
"The Current" caught my ear during the first listen. It's grungey, spacey and calm. You potheads are going to love this. There were times when I was listening to the album and thought, "Wait, where is this going?" and then a few seconds later it sunk in and all made sense.
This album's dynamics can very well sneak up on you when you least expect it but that's the refreshing aspect of this album! In a music world where it's so easy for everything to sound the same, Cymbals Eat Guitars are holding their own.
