This Cape Town duo, who established themselves in the wake of their previous project’s (The Aztec Sapphire) popularity and adoration, jumped on the scene about a year and a half ago with "Noble Rot." It was launched as a video which provided the track with Cute Couple’s quirky and charming visual element with a fine tuned finesse.
Their sound places a focus on subtly intricate guitar work, solid live drum grooves and soulful, warm and nostalgic vocals. It is also without virtually any electronic music influences – a characteristic fairly uncommon to many live indie outfits in a city which holds the hybridization of instrumental and electronic elements in high regard. Unfortunately, as an extension of this, live bands have experienced a lull in performance opportunity for about two years now – evident in the fact that Cute Couple’s only live performance to date was one they organised themselves.
Regardless of this lack of opportunity, Cute Couple has recently moved into a permanent practice and recording space and are hard at work to build on the 3 tracks that make up their current releases. I for one am crazy excited to see them work themselves into the position they are bound to hold – that of South Africa’s leading indie outfit. Stay tuned.
