Following the release of 2019’s Jinx and this year’s “Trophy,” psychedelic indie-rock outfit Crumb has struck again, this time with their latest single “Balloon”, which was released alongside “BNR” earlier this month. The track features their signature trippy, hypnotic synth-pop sounds, overlaid by hazy, dreamy falsetto vocals. The soundscape is blissed-out and weird, but multi-layered in a way that oozes sophistication and depth.
While the beat and rhythm of “Balloon” might make you think it’s a dance track (and it is, I suppose), the lyrics tell an eerie and foreboding story. In a press statement, frontwoman Lila Ramani explains that the track is about:
“...a girl that dances so fast in the club that her head falls off”.
And yet, somehow, despite its darkness, Crumb have managed to fit this subtle homage to horror perfectly and snugly into the kinks and grooves of their very own brand of psychedelia. Let’s hope the follow-up to Jinx is on its way; I can’t wait to see what these guys do next.
