Why do we like this?
We're on the verge of wrapping up our Bay Area series, so I figured what better way to do so than with Crown City Rockers? Who, you ask? Truth be told, I've spoken to a few of our hip-hop contributors here on Indie Shuffle and none of them had heard of the group. Lord knows why, because they definitely should have.
My buddy Andres Reyes introduced me to Crown City Rockers' album, Earthtones, while I was studying at the University of California in San Diego. Prior to hearing this album, I had all but written off hip-hop with one simple slogan: "rap is crap." I was wrong, and while Dangermouse's Adult Swim album was the first to demonstrate such, it really was Crown City Rockers that turned me onto the true beauty of hip-hop.
How'd they do it? I think it's the jazz. Andres introduced the band somewhat like this: "Yo, dude, you've gotta check out this ill band. They record all of their samples live." Record their samples live?!?! Awesome! And so it went...
Now it's your turn. Not a fan of hip-hop? Try telling me that after listening to these sick tracks.
