Australian electronic trio Crooked Colours are back -- and this time, it's personal. "Step" is a little different than some of their recent releases, with much of the single focusing more on space and a stripped-back atmosphere.
The vocals really resonate above the deep beats, despite their deliberately timid, wavering feel. There's no build-up towards the first brief drop, injecting a swell of dark energy, before diving back into the sparse, understated verse.
As the track enters its final stretch, it really starts to intensify -- rapidly and powerfully. The beat is huge, the rhythm is addictive. I love this tune.
"Step" is the first single from Crooked Colours' long-awaited debut album, set for release in early 2016. If this is anything to go by, we're in for something pretty special.
The Perth trio have made a splash all around Australia, and are set to play their very first USA shows later this month - keep an eye on their socials for details.
