Why do we like this?
I used to sing when I was a kid, and the big joke our director would throw at us was, "Hit your notes straight on! I don't want to hear any of that couuuuntry music dip!" Then he'd demonstrate and we'd laugh, because who wants to sound like a twangin' country singer?
I take back all of my youthful mocking of the twang, at least when I listen to gems like "Blood Red Sentimental Blues" by Cotton Jones. My absolutely favorite track from the band's 2009 album Paranoid Cocoon, this is indie twang at its best. A little country and a little bit of fuzzy reverb, it's one of the simpler tunes on the album (a killer collection of tracks overall) and was hands down one of my favorite songs last summer. "There's no need for hesitation, honey, I've been rearranged," warbles Michael Nau with some sweet harmony from Whitney McGraw.
A sweet number for this summer's approach, it evokes memory, longing, and anticipation all at once. A good way to greet June, if I do say so myself.
