Nostalgia can be wonderful, but yearning for a past that's long gone can also be depressing, especially if there's regret involved.
Cool Sounds' latest single "In Blue Skies" tackles that very pain by asking the agonizing "What if?" question as frontman Dainis Lacey looks back on a broken relationship.
"I still wonder, wonder what if I stayed / Wonder if my life would have changed," he ponders with no resolve. The remorse hits harder in the chorus when Jimmy Tait's Sara Retallick whispers, "Stay with me, never leave," haunting his thoughts as the one he let get away, to whom he responds mournfully, "I still wonder what if I had."
Yet, as wistful as "In Blue Skies" is, it doesn't feel that way if you focus on the music instead of the lyrics. There's a calm, pleasant flow from the echoing ripples of single-strummed chords, the crooning sax, and the flamenco-inspired bridge that makes the track sound more dreamy and ambient than melancholy. It's the kind of song that can lull you into a mellow state, but break your heart at the same time.
