Why do we like this?
If humans can lose themselves to something else, something bigger than themselves, like love, does that not bring into question the locus of identity?
We take ourselves to be solid and real — this tiny blob of flesh wandering confused through the world. We think our routines fixed, we consider our ways of thinking unchanging, we take our bodies to be permanent, yet add a human in whom to place our love and we lose ourselves. It's wonderful, it's bizarre, it's fragile.
Detailing the meaning of "Terms of Surrender," Conditioner explains:
I think the song is about 2 things at once - a celebration of acceptance of love, and a warning about fully losing touch with yourself. Really falling in love and building a life with someone requires that loss of independence - and that sacrifice is beautiful. But it can also be terrifying. This song tries to capture both sides of that in equal measure.
"Terms of Surrender" is a striking blend of bossa nova and indie rock and marks the third single from the LA-based duo's self-titled, debut LP out September 24. Keep your eyes and ears peeled!
