This song frustrates me. Not because of the music itself. Not the album art. None of that. It's because this is the only release from the ever-talented, London-based Clever Girl. They're taunting us with this effervescent jazz-meets-rock-meets-punk. We need more.
When I first heard this track, I expected it to be -- at risk of sounding critical -- basic math rock; interesting finger picking, creative chord coloring, and intricate drum patterns. Which it is. What we didn't expect, however, was Clever Girl jazzing it up on us with that sultry saxophone and swinging rhythm. Does this belong in a rock concert or jazz club? We can't tell, but whatever it's doing, it's doing it right.
Make sure to give the rest of the No Drum and Bass in the Jazz Room LP a listen for more textured, melodic ear candy.
And to Clever Girl, if you're reading this: give us more music. We do not ask it; we demand it.
