Why do we like this?
Last week, L.A. duo Classixx took the stage before headliner Toro y Moi at Oakland's Fox Theater. Starting earlier than any band I've probably ever seen, Classixx began their set a mere 15 minutes after doors opened at 8pm. Heartbreakingly, many people missed their set entirely due to their odd start time. That being said, the part of the set which I was able to catch was bedazzled and breathtaking.
Equipped with dueling pianos, track jackets, and a guitar, the City of Angels duo swooned over the dance floor with tracks from their latest LP Hanging Gardens, like "Holding On" and the re-released "I'll Get You." Towards the end of their 40-minute set, they even managed to pull off a perfect cover of Drake's "Hold On We're Coming Home" through the misty, airy light show. They spent the evening swathed in monochromatic light, and the crowd swayed obediently for every last beat.
Classixx is basically the perfect hipster band. Their music can be played at any hour of the day or night, and it's good for dancing, chilling, talking, drinking, or just hanging out at a park. Starting out a few years back, they were more remix centered, but have been able to very successfully transition to original production coupled with more live traditional instruments while retaining their same sound aesthetic -- which is no small feat.
The takeaway here? Their live sets are more than recommended, be it DJ or live.
